David Freedman
David M. Freedman is a highly experienced construction manager with 40 years of experience applying his expertise as an engineer and architect. He first gained education as a city and urban community and regional planner at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. Thereafter, he joined the United States Navy, serving as an enlisted Hospital Corpsman before earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics and naval science from the University of Mississippi and being Commissioned as a Naval Officer. Subsequently, he earned certifications in naval architecture and marine engineering through Naval Postgraduate Engineering Training.
For 10 years, Mr. Freedman served in the Navy, working as a chief engineer and as an overhaul and ship repair officer. Following his time in the Navy, he joined the Herbert Construction Company as a project manager, following which time he stepped into the role of president of Advance Design Associates, a position he held for nearly five years. Thereafter, Mr. Freedman went on to apply his expertise as a project manager at Kreisler Borg Florman Construction working with the NYC School Construction Authority on many challenging projects, providing new and improved educational facilities to the children of NYC. Then, once more, stepping into a presidential role, he served as the chief executive officer of American Planning & Management of New York.
In 2007, he continued on in a leadership role at SMI Construction as the vice president and director of operations and simultaneously worked with Aerotek as a consultant contractor and a construction and environmental engineer. It is in this role that he operated for nearly a decade. After doing some consulting work for FEMA for various natural disasters, he applied his expertise to disaster recovery efforts, helping hundreds of residents navigate the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) processes during Hurricane Irene. Thereafter, he continued his disaster relief efforts during Superstorm Sandy, helping over 200 families and small businesses before being asked to work as a storm recovery expert for the New York State Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery.
Outside of his work in disaster relief, in 2013, he was ordained as an Orthodox Rabbi at the age of 55. His devotion to others is practiced through his work as a community specialist through the United States Chaplains Corps and by serving as a rabbi and Jewish chaplain through the New York State Chaplain Task Force, positions he has held since 2018. His specialty in chaplaincy is end-of-life care.
Drawing from his experience as a natural disaster recovery expert, Mr. Freedman founded Chrysalis Disaster Recovery LLC and has since collaborated with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, and the New York City Economic Development Corporation. During this time, he successfully managed the FEMA grant leading to the successful construction of the new Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital on the campus of the old Coney Island Hospital, now known as South Brooklyn Health in Brooklyn, his most notable achievement over the course of his career thus far. As an engineer and architect, Rabbi Freedman holds membership with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society for Health Care Engineering, and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
Furthermore, Mr. Freedman has earned and holds numerous certifications related to engineering, environmental safety and assessment, and disaster relief work; most notably, certified by the FEMA Emergency Management Institute in incident command system ICS-100 and crisis, emergency, and disaster management. In all he has accomplished and contributed within his community and to communities across the country, he attributes his success to being a great team builder.
Along with his professional endeavors and his chaplain work, rabbinical studies, and various charity work, Mr. Freedman, the former president of the Five Towns Democratic Club from 1998 to 2000, engages in various public speaking opportunities and has published two novels. In the next five to 10 years, he plans to continue his work with the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation, managing any disaster-related projects that arise, and remain actively involved in disaster recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, Denver, Houston, and New Jersey.
